SMDP-II Activities of CEERI's IC Design Group

Special Manpower Development for VLSI Design and Related Software : Phase-II (SMDP-II) has been sponsored by DIT/MCIT at CEERI, Pilani.

Please also check the official SMDP-II project website.

This project has its roots in Special Manpower Development for VLSI Design and Related Software (SMDP) project that was also sponsored by DoE/MIT/DIT. See SMDP project for more details of the work done in the earlier phase of the project.

The duration of the current project is FIVE (05) years starting from April, 2005 upto March, 2010.

The project involves 32 institutes in total : 07 RCs and 25 PIs.

The Resource Centers (RCs) are :

  1. CEERI, Pilani.
  2. IISc, Bangalore.
  3. IIT, Bombay (Mumbai).
  4. IIT, Delhi.
  5. IIT, Kanpur.
  6. IIT, Kharagpur.
  7. IIT, Madras (Chennai).

The RCs will conduct Instruction Enhancement Programme (IEP) covering the various topics related to VLSI design. These IEPs are for enhancing the knowledge of the faculty of the institutes that are participating in the SMDP-II project.

The Participating Institutes (PIs) are :

  1. (2) IIT, Roorkee and IIT, Guwahati.
  2. (17) NITs located at Srinagar, Hamirpur, Jalandhar, Kurukshetra, Jaipur, Bhopal, Nagpur, Surat, Calicut, Surathkal, Trichy, Warangal, Jamshedpur, Rourkela, Durgapur, Silchar, Allahabad.
  3. (6) TU-Patiala, IT-BHU-Varanasi, BESU-Howrah, JU-Jadhavpur, PSGCT-Coimbatore, SGSITS-Indore.
Each of the above PIs are associated with a RC for closer interaction. The PIs associated with CEERI, Pilani are:
  1. Thapar University, Patiala.
  2. MNIT, Jaipur.
  3. NIT, Kurukshetra.
Fully-equipped VLSI design labs have been setup at all these locations with EDA tools from Synopsys, Cadence, Mentor, Magma, CoWare, Xilinx running on PCs supplied by HCL with Redhat Linux as well as FPGA prototyping boards from Xilinx.

Please see the vendor's list for contacting them (via email or web) for any issue with the items supplied under SMDP-II project.

Please also see the site guide for VLSI design laboratory that has been circulated by CEERI, Pilani.

All the institutes have additionally been provided separate books grant by DIT/MCIT to procure books related to VLSI design topics based on a recommended list prepared by CEERI, Pilani.

Please check the books list of June, 2006 (base version), March, 2007 (additions of 2006), January, 2008 (additions of 2007), January, 2009 (additions of 2008), and April, 2010(additions of 2009-2010) covering the topics of VLSI design, microelectronics, computer science, system administration, DSP, mechatronics, MEMS, etc. that have been circulated.

The PIs will run introductory courses on VLSI Design at the final year B. Tech. / B. E. level and gradually move towards running post-graduate courses or degree programmes (M. Tech. / M. E.) related to Microelectronics and VLSI design.

Most of the PIs have introduced the basic courses on VLSI Design at B. Tech. / B. E. level that are available to all branches of engineering.

Most of these institutes have started (or are in the process of starting) a M. Tech. / M. E. in VLSI Design. It is expected that all the institutes will have courses related to VLSI design topics that are also available as electives to students of M. Tech. / M. E. of other degrees and specializations.
